This spitz-type dog is native from Norway. The Norwegian Buhund was the dog that traveled along side with Vikings. They were high regarded by these and when their owner died the dogs were placed in the same grave. Vikings believed that they should take their most precious belongings to the afterlife to ensure protection. In Norwegian, hund means dog but bu refers to herding.
With the end of the Vikings Era, the Norwegian Buhund, began to be utilized as a shepherd and farm guardian.
The Norwegian Buhund was first exhibit in 1920s. Besides their ability as shepherds, Buhunds are also trained to help people with disabilities and also to integrate the police.

The Buhund is considered to be the easiest of the Spitz breeds to train. They love to please and demand their share of attention. They are very affectionate and like to be part of the family. They are vigilant and make good watchdogs, because of their tendency to bark.
They require a good socialization and if given they are very good with children and other pets. They can be stubborn but they learn quickly. The Buhund is by nature very clean and doesn´t have demanding grooming needs.
This breed needs a lot of exercise. They adjust well leaving in a home with a yard. They are highly intelligent and get bored easily, so a lot of stimulation should be provided to them.

The Norwegian Buhund is a typical northern breed, with prick ears and curled tail. They can reach 46 cm and weight 26 kg maximum.
As a devoted herder, the Buhund has strength and stamina. This double coated dog can have two solid colors: wheaten or black. In the first case, a black mask is acceptable.
